The Prunarbo 8 Inch Chainsaw Dissected

How Good is the Prunarbo 8 Inch Chainsaw?

Prunarbo 8 inch chainsawThe Prunarbo 8 inch chainsaw is, as the name suggests, designed with pruning (garden) trees and shrubs in mind.

It will do more than that though.More about it’s capabilities further down.

This is an impressive battery powered mini chainsaw that is designed to be used with one hand only.

You will need to resist the temptation to use it for bigger jobs than it is designed for. This is often easier said than done because it can chew through wood with remarkable efficiency.

So lets have a more in-depth look at this cordless mini chainsaw.

The Good Bits

This Prunarbo mini saw has several features that should push it towards the top of your shopping list.

Equipped with a Brushless Electric Motor

Brushless electric motors are just so much better than brushed electric motors.

Think increased power, decreased energy consumption, decreased noise levels and an overall improvement in efficiency.

The increased efficiencies mean that the longevity of the motor is greatly increased. So if you look after all the other bits as well, your battery driven chainsaw will keep working for a long time!

Interchangeable Battery – Bonus

Makita 18V battery

Compatible Makita 18V battery

All cordless mini chainsaws come with a battery (or even two). However, acquiring another spare for any particular mini saw can sometimes be quite challenging, and sometimes, just plain impossible.

That’s why the fact that this Prunarbo  is compatible with the range of Makita 18V batteries is such good news.

Makita is a well established and respected brand and so their batteries are widely available now and likely to be well into the future.

If you have ever tried to source an obscure battery for a battery powered tool, then you will appreciate what a plus this compatibility is!

Automatic Oiler

All chainsaw bars and chains need oiling. And that includes mini chainsaws!

Mini chainsaws are by design small. So having an inbuilt chain and bar oiling mechanism is not always a given.

The good news is that this Prunarbo mini cordless chainsaw is big enough to have an oiling mechanism,. included.

Having said that, there are two drawbacks to inbuilt oiling mechanisms in mini chainsaws.

1) If you store the mini chainsaw with some oil still in the oil reservoir then it is likely to leak out and make a mess.

2) Don’t fill the reservoir to the brim when using the saw as the result is likely to be oil leaking all over the place as you work. In fact, a general rule of thumb would be to only fill the reservoir a third full before you start working with it.

NB. You will need to purchase the oil separately as it is not supplied with this Prunarbo Cordless Chainsaw

Chain Speed

With a chain speed of 11 meters per second, the Prunarbo has a chain speed advantage over many other 88 inch bar mini chainsaws.

And while chain speed is not the only factor in determining how well a chainsaw does its job, it certainly makes a large contribution.

In short, everything else being equal, a higher chain speed gives you better cutting power!

The Other Bits

That #*&! Safety Lock Button

To be fair, almost ALL mini chainsaws that have a safety button struggle to find an ergonomically satisfactory place to put it.

That is probably because they are, by design, small tools with limited space.

And woe is you if you are left handed!

The good news though is that it actually has a safety button. You just have to work out the best way for you to use it!

No Storage Box or Scabbard

While this is a mini chainsaw, it is big enough that a storage box would have been a useful addition.

In fact a storage box would be preferable to the gloves and goggles of questionable quality supplied with this purchase.

If this is a big issue for you then you should consider looking at the recently upgraded Imoumlive 8 inch mini chainsaw which comes with a storage box but no scabbard.

Or you could consider the Kebtec 8 inch mini chainsaw which comes with  both a scabbard and storage case – but does not have an inbuilt oiler system!

Performance & Expectations

This 8 inch Prunarbo mini easily slices through branches up to 6 inches in diameter.

It can handle 8 inch plus diameter logs as well but remember it is not designed for this. So while it can get through them, it is not advisable to use it for these larger diameters on a regular basis. If you do, don’t expect the tool to survive for too long.

If you need to cut up logs/cut down trees with a diameter of greater than say 4 to 5 inches on a regular basis, then rather look at a chainsaw with a longer bar length.

However, this mini saw is absolutely ideal for cutting up small diameter fire wood, pruning garden trees, clearing trail paths and the like.

It is light and very portable and will accomplish these tasks with ease.

And Finally

If you are not too sure if you actually need the capabilities of an 8-inch saw, you can compare this one to 6 inch and 4 inch bar mini chainsaws.

And if pruning is your game and you need precision and accuracy, then also consider battery operated pruning shears.
