The Magic of Cordless Electric Pruning Shears
Cordless Electric Pruning Shears are a class of battery driven tools designed specifically for pruning!
Many people use a small or mini chainsaw for pruning plants in their gardens, Which is fine but why not use something designed specifically for the job?
This is especially true if you are trying to prune plants that have fine delicate branches. Or where the branches you want to prune are close together.
In these cases, even the smallest mini chainsaw in the steadiest of hands will tend to be a bit rough. Co-lateral damage of surrounding foliage and small branches is probably almost unavoidable.
Pruning needs to be precise, with clean cutting and no damage to any of the surrounding plant structure.
Improved Garden Shears
So basically what you have here is a very clever improvement on the classic hand powered pruning shears. Toss out centuries of manual labor and go modern!
For those of us who are getting on a bit (and isn’t that most gardeners?!), pruning can become a physical challenge if you have a lot to do……or even not so much to do 🙂
The repetitive use of the same hand and movement can limit your efficiency and effectiveness when pruning. Your hand gets tired quickly if it’s a once a year activity. That means you either stop to rest or carry on but perhaps with less accuracy in order to get the job done.
The obvious answer to that is to reduce the physical effort required to do the same job. Retain the accuracy and precision of the traditional pruning shear but make the physical effort more tolerable.
It’s the gardening version of the increasingly popular class of bicycles know as e-bikes – just cheaper!!
Buying Decision Factors
So here are a few things to keep in mind when considering which cordless electric pruning shears would be best for you.
1) Price. Of course. As with everything, you get what you pay for. Also, if it seems too good to be true – it usually is! So while you obviously need to take price into account, I don’t think it should be the deciding factor! Or even a major factor!
2) Type of Electric Motor. In my (humble) opinion, this is the crux of the matter. The development of the brushless electric motor has radically changed the power and reliability of electric motors. Now they are making them small enough on a commercial scale to be used in small hand held tools like pruning shears.
Once you understand the advantages that a brushless electric motor gives you over a conventional electric motor then the decision becomes self evident. However, they are usually more expensive. See point 1 above 🙂
3) Pruning capabilities. There are a number of factors you need to consider here in terms of what is important to you and the pruning you will be doing. This might be the diameter of branch the tool is able to cut through. Or how long it can work for before needing to be recharged. And if time is of the essence, then how long the battery needs to re charge. The list goes on but you get the idea.
Another option to consider is an extension pole. If you need to prune foliage beyond the reach of your arms, then an electric pruner which can be attached to a pole to extend your reach is a winner!
In Conclusion
It goes without saying that with one of these awesome little tools in your gardening armory, pruning season will be a whole lot less challenging, and a whole lot more fun.
One last word. You wont find many familiar chain saw brand names amongst your choices. But don’t be put off by that. These little tools are magic and over time brand names will begin to stand out as leading brands in their own right.
Happy (electric) pruning!!
